Empty Nest With Me

No one will eat cute cookies!

My husband is super cute about my cookies. For the annual holiday cookie exchange at my friend’s house, My daughter Chloe and I made snowflake and snow globe cookies. Dave thought they were the most amazing cookies in the whole wide world! I must admit they were a work of art.

But here’s the deal folks, cookies are made for eating!  No matter how beautiful they are.

Yes, they are real cute but you gotta eat em! What is the deal? Everyone at the holiday party ogled over them, asked how they were made, said sweet and complimentary things…but everyone said they were too cute to eat!

The other guests brought beautiful, tiny cupcakes, and super yummy cookies.  There were coconut macaroons and warm and cozy gingerbread spice cupcakes with cinnamon cream cheese frosting.  There were Rumor cookies, cute gingerbread men and melting snowmen. There was a plethora of lovely desserts to choose from and people actually ate them!

I love cookie exchanges. They are so festive and fun.

Proudly displaying my cookies in my go-to red dress with my eyes closed ! HA! At least my friend Aubrey looks cute!

When it was time to share cookies, everyone lined up along the beautiful display with an empty platter ready to fill  with a variety of magical creations.

I look over to see my husband placing ALL but maybe two of MY cookies into his to-go box!

Horrified, I booked it over to him and whispered lovingly, “Babe, those cookies are for everyone. You’re not supposed to take all of your own cookies back”.

He gave me a blank and slightly mischievous glance and whisked them out to the car like the Hamburglar.

The mix of emotions I felt was horror, slight embarrassment and a big, full, warm heart because my hubby loved my cookies so much that he would STEAL them from the cookie exchange.

Meanwhile, back at home, the cookies never got eaten. They sat there looking lovely for days and weeks…Nobody would touch them.

I’d say, “Please eat the cookies, they are not just to look at.”  “But they’re too cute” they would say. “But they will just get stale”, I’d argue. But alas and alack nobody would eat them. So, I popped them in my freezer and I guess they’ll be decorations around my gingerbread house next year.  Problem solved.

Chloe and I just made some beautiful elephant cookies as a valentine treat for dinner guests. Same thing.  My guests would eat the meringues but, again, would not eat our cookie works of art.

After the Valentines guests left, my husband broke the trunk off of my beautiful elephant, and I have to admit, I felt a little sad that he mutilated my beautiful cookie. I also wondered why he chose MY elephant and not Chloe’s, to destroy.  Was it that my cookie was uglier than hers?

HAHAHA.  How’s that for mixed messages!

Chloe and I are now convinced that when we make beautiful fun cookies we also have to make ugly ones to go along with them so people at least try them.

Along with being super cute, they’re actually really, really yummy to eat.

Someday I will write a post on how to make the snow globe cookies. For a glance at the elephant cookie attempt, and the best cookie and royal icing recipe, check out my adorable Chloe demonstrating our skills on her YouTube channel.
