Empty Nest With Me

Something Wicked This Way Comes…

· A Gathering of the Witches Coven ·

Over the years I’ve refined my Halloween party to a Gathering of Witches. No ghosts or silly monsters, it is a bougie gathering of witches who like to think of themselves as high class and out of the ordinary.

Tis the witching hour, my friends.  Time to cast spells and create potions!

My costume Witchy-ness has taken many forms over time but the witch theme, itself, has been prevailed for many years.

I’ve been a blond witch and a wicked witch…this year I was a Forest Witch!

No cutesy witches here, the Gathering of the Coven is filled with authentic, dark and sinister witches…

And decor that only dark souls appreciate

From bronzed skeletons to pet ravens, shrunken heads, furry spiders and slimy toads.

When guests arrive, they park their broomsticks at the door and often kick off their shoes, hats and capes.

The playlist for the night includes selections such as Peter Gundry’s, Tonight Ve Dance, They came wearing masks and Goetia, and Lana Del Rey’s, Once Upon A Dream along with Bad Things, Beast of Burden, Time Warp, Season of the Witch.

When Frank Sinatra’s Witch Craft plays, the witches and warlocks pair up for a dance.

In the washroom you’ll find captured faeries and a dragon offering a towel.

Dinner is served in martini glasses crawling with black spiders.

The menu is Monster Mashtinis. Guests fill their martini glasses with Dave’s incredible mashed potatoes and then add toppings of their choice.

There are toppings for your classic-style mashed potatoes like bat shaped butter, sour cream, chives, cubed ham, turkey and bacon bits. To spice things up there is salsa, veggie taco meat, cheese, sour cream, cilantro for a Mexican style. The hearty option included chopped fried chicken and gravy.

On the side there is a prosciutto skull where guests peel the flesh from the skull to their glutinous heart’s content

Along with a platter of spider infested deviled eggs and a bowl of skulls oozing with deep red sauce, veggie meatballs and gooey mozzarella cheese.

For dessert there is a variety of witch fingers…

from green chocolate covered pretzels to witch finger cookies with almond fingernails and a witch head filled with Boom-Chicka-Pop kettle corn.

There is a spider’s nest full of spider eggs that taste remarkably like cream puffs.  A tray of skull cookies and Mitchie’s famous giant chocolate Kahlua trifle filled with eyeballs, severed fingers, worms and other items required for the perfect witches brew, rounds out the dessert choices and our bellies!

Last year Chloe and I even conquered an eye-ball cake!

The dining table is set but most of the witches and warlocks wander about with Mashtini’s in hand.

Below the dining room, witches and warlocks descend through a tunnel of bats and lanterns to find their way into the dungeon where they pick their poison.  A glowing skull-shaped vat full of blue sparkling vodka awaits as they mix their drink of choice using items from the iced cauldron.

They are surrounded by giant spider webs and more eerie potions and elixirs.

It is in the dungeon where tarot cards are read.

And then the potions are brewed and spells cast

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.

Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the cauldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt and toe of frog,
Wool of bat and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg and owlet's wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.

Cool it with a baboon's blood,
Then the charm is firm and good.

O well done! I commend your pains;
And every one shall share i' the gains;
And now about the cauldron sing,
Live elves and fairies in a ring,
Enchanting all that you put in.

By the pricking of my thumbs,
Something wicked this way comes.

SHAKESPEARE'S MACBETH

Incidentally…we cast a powerful beauty spell.

Here’s the before picture of my friend:

And here’s the after:

Pretty powerful spell, huh?

Happiest of Halloween’s, my friends! xoxo

    Hello Jill –

    Finally, I have a free second to comment on this post. I loved your pirate soiree, but THIS… was deliciously, delightfully wicked! I mean this in the best way. The decorations and costumes were salacious. And I could taste the food and sip the wine. Chloe’s eyes were memorizing! I am truly entranced. Sigh! Alas, I must return to my studies. My life is so dreary. Well, not really. I have a new grandson! This upcoming holiday season will be magical! I can’t wait to read about your holiday traditions! Much love – Vicki

      Thank you, Vicki! It is always so much fun!

      How very exciting about your new grandson! I look forward to those days…someday! Make sure you get that cute little bundle of joy a little elf onesie. One of my favorite pictures of Gavin was in a striped red and green onesie with a little elf hat. So stinkin’ cute!
      Enjoy every minute!
      xoxo Jill
