Vegan Gravy

· And a Whole Lotta Love in the Kitchen! ·

Isn’t it funny how we all stand around in the kitchen? There are plenty of couches and lots of chairs at the dining table. There are even stools at the kitchen counter, but somehow, everyone loves to be underfoot in the kitchen. It can be a little stressful as the head chef, to have to dodge humans and step over dogs and cats while attempting to create your masterpiece. Not to mention, plan everything so it comes out of the oven at the exact same time.

However, as I reflect on those crazy times in the kitchen, I’d prefer that over anything else. Who wants to be a lonely cook with perfect food? I’d rather have fun, lots of company and maybe a dish or two that is cold when the rest is hot. It’s all about the love in the kitchen.

Vegan Gravy

This gravy tastes just like the gravy you eat at thanksgiving on your turkey and mashed potatoes, but there were no animals harmed in the making! (Just a little vegetarian brain washing right there!) Give it a try even if you don't mind harming animals!!!
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Vegetable Oil
  • 1/3 cup Onion chopped-Any onion will do. I used yellow, white or sweet
  • 5 cloves Garlic minced
  • 1/2 cup Flour all purpose
  • 4 teaspoons Nutritional Yeast
  • 4 Tablespoons Liquid Aminos or Soy Sauce
  • 2 cups vegetable broth or more to desired thickness
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  • Heat oil in saucepan over medium heat.
  • Saute onion and garlic until soft and translucent, 5 minutes or so.
  • Add flour, nutritional yeast and liquid aminos and stir until mixed. This will become a smooth paste.
  • Whisk in the vegetable broth gradually.
  • Add sage, salt and pepper
  • Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer.
  • Stir continuously for about 10 minutes or until thickened.

Notes

This is a fairly thick gravy.  Modify by adding more broth.
I really love this gravy.  From what I remember, over 30 years ago, it tastes very similar to turkey gravy that is served over your mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving.
Keyword healthy, vegan, vegetarian

Serve this over Mashed Potatoes, Tofurky, Vegetarian Stuffing or this Mock Chicken Tofu. Or anything that is bland and boring. Yummy stuff.

Being in the kitchen, cooking and eating with family is my happy place! What’s yours, my friends?

Lots of Love XOXO Jill

Hey Jill! I’ve been vegan for about 4 years now, can’t wait to try this, it sounds yummy. Nutritional yeast always makes anything that much better, plus its healthy too.

    All the love,

Cameron…I agree. Nutritional yeast is the best! Chloe and Gavin love to eat popcorn dipped in sriracha and nutritional yeast! Or, just the nutritional yeast without sriracha. It’s a fun twist in popcorn flavors! You should try it!
Let me know how you like the gravy if you get a chance to make it.
How are you feeling, health-wise, being a vegan? I became vegetarian about 30 years ago. I tried vegan for awhile but it was hard for me. I’ve introduced fish back into my diet now and then but usually eat a vegetarian diet. I adore animals and can’t bear the thought of eating them. That’s my reason for vegetarianism. What’s yours?

Jill, that is so awesome! I have tried just nutritional yeast on popcorn but for some reason didn’t care too much for it, but that was a few years ago, maybe I’ll try it again! My reasons are about the same as yours, I love animals so much and I slowly began to feel worse any time I ate animal products, not just physically but mentally as well. One day I just went vegan cold turkey, ( no pun intended lol). It’s made me feel 1000 times better and I don’t see myself ever going back, fish was hard for me to give up too, I think that was the last type of “meat” I was eating before I went vegan. I’ve discovered so many plentiful vegan recipes over the last 4 years and I rarely crave any animal products ever! Let me know if you’d want me to send some great recipes I know of 🙂
        All the best,

Hey Jill! Some of these are not my own recipes but I have made them and they are super YUM

            Spring rolls: https://www.yummymummykitchen.com/2018/02/spring-rolls.html

Chocolate peanut butter balls https://namelymarly.com/best-vegan-peanut-butter-balls/ my mom makes these and I have too, they are amazing!

            “Chicken” noodle soup https://sweetsimplevegan.com/2018/02/easy-vegan-chicken-noodle-soup/

My moms fried Okra is also really good she uses unsweetened almond milk then corn meal and gluten free flour and mixes it with paprika and whatever other spices you’d like and sautees them!

We also make a really good vegan lasagna basically just make it like a normal one but add beefless crumbles by the brand gardein and “follow your heart” mozarella cheese, then add spinach, and whatever other things you’d like

Those are just a few I know of that are really yummy, sorry I don’t have any specific measurements I’m not too particular about that stuff lol! Hope you try one 🙂 I’d reccomend the peanut butter balls first for sure

Thank you so much for sharing. We’re going on a road trip so we may not get to it for a week or so but I will certainly let you know when we give them a try.

Thank you, again, for sharing. Lots of love to you, Cameron. xoxo Jill
